Leslie - Our Southern Belle

We spent the last ten days with our daughter Leslie and Eric, her significant other, in Booneville, MS. It was great seeing the both of them. Worse than the humidity were the tiny gnats (referred to as no-see-ums.) Mike’s arms and legs are sporting at least fifty red bites that are itchy red dots.

One day we all went to Memphis which was a little more than a two hour drive. We headed to Beale Street which is downtown and you can hear blues and rock bands inside and outside in the park. There are bars all over the place, one was where B.B.King got his start, and a lot of others that had funny names. It’s like Rush Street in Chicago or Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Since it was just a Sunday afternoon it was pretty quiet, but we were told more than once by several people to avoid going there at dark.

The Peabody, the South’s grand hotel, is the epitome of southern hospitality and luxury. It is still the social and business hub of Memphis. The marble fountain in the lobby is still graced with ducks, which we saw in the fountain. They march twice a day to Souza music, but we were about two hours too early to see this.

Among the various bbq capitals in America, Memphis is a standout and we just had to check it out. The “top dog” wasn’t open on Sundays so we tried second choice called Corky’s in Germantown, which is a very exclusive area. We all enjoyed our meals.

One day Eric & Mike went fishing and had a great time. Eric caught 4 and Mike caught 2. The biggest catch was Eric’s five pound catfish. He cleaned them and we had them for dinner the next night. We had catfish, bass, bluegill, and crappie, along with homemade hush puppies and fries. What a great meal.

The time really flew. It was fun just visiting, relaxing, and sleeping in.
